The Right Hairstyle for Your Face Shape

The Right Hairstyle for Your Face Shape

One of the most important factors of hairstyle suitability is face shape analysis.

Why is this so important? Simply put, if the wrong hairstyle is created for the wrong face shape, the result is a disaster. In fact, even if a well executed, well cut hairstyle is performed on the wrong face shape, the result is still a disaster. Why again you ask? Because hairstyles are predominately about shape and geometry. It's all about putting the perfect frame around a person's face to balance and bring perspective to the overall shape.

The shape must minimize non pleasing attributes while promoting and complimenting positive ones. Once this important objective is achieved, then bringing the hairstyle to life with texture and colors should follow. This is all usually done by hairstylists. A good hairstylist will just know instinctively what shape will or won't suit you. It is also very important and handy for you to understand face shape suitability as well as it will help you to understand what does and does not work for you and why. It will also help you to communicate better with your stylist and to keep them somewhat honest.

There is a general rule that applies to face shape balancing and it is that you should try to achieve an oval shape, which is the most perfect and pleasing shape to the human eye. To do this, long faces need shortening, just as wide faces need lengthening. It’s quite simple really!
How To Choose Your Face Shape

Look at a photo of yourself that has the hair off your face and find the best match from the following descriptions and pictures. It's important to remember that even though your face may not be an exact match of any single shape, it will resemble one shape over all.

Oval Face Shape:
Curvilinear shape. Length is equal to one and a half times width, with forehead and jaw the same width.
Round Face Shape:
Circular shaped. Length is approximately equal to width.
Square Face Shape:
Strong and broad forehead with angular jaw.
Heart Face Shape:
Wide at the forehead and cheekbones, narrow at the jawline.
Triangular Face Shape:
Forehead and cheekbones are narrow with a wide jawline.
Diamond Face Shape:
Forehead and jawline are narrow with wide and high cheekbones.
Oblong Face Shape:
Face is longer than it is wide with a long straight cheek line.

Celebrity Hairstyles at MTV Awards 2008

Haircut styles Celebrity Hairstyles @ MTV Awards 2008

Mariah Carey Hairstyle 2008
Mariah's locks were let loose last year at the VH1 Save the Music Gala. The waves work really well, and sliced ends effectively give her edges a softer look. It's a good style if you've got an oval or diamond shaped face, and fine to medium texture hair.
But Mariah's face is a little bit too long to make this style totally work. More angled bangs would have been better to shorten the appearance of her face. She got the length right though, because wearing her hair down not up is definitely the right hairstyle for her face shape.

Rihanna Hairstyle -Chunky is Good 2008

I'm getting over her too, but let's face it: her hair always looks good. Crops are in, and Rihanna's skipped the "conservative mom" look (Katie Holmes' current hairstyle) and gone for a funky asymmetrical style. Key is having one side cut shorter above the ear and the top tapering down to the opposite side.

This hairstyle gets a big thumbs up from me. It's the perfect razor-cut, and the chunky violet sections are eye-catching and attention grabbing. Could Rihanna do something even better at the MTV awards?

Britney Spears Hairstyle 2008

Britney's hairstyle from last year has the potential to look luscious. Length has been left to hang down the mid back, and sliced layers have been cut through the back and sides to ease weight around the edges. Pinning the hair up is a great way to add height.

For Britney though, too much bleach ruined the potential of this style. Like any color, it's important to make sure it matches your complexion, and in Britney's case a more golden color would have suited her peaches and cream complexion better. (She would have benefitted from "Choosing Your Skin Tone and Enhancing Your Hair Color," our free hairstyle consultation). The pressure's on for this "comeback kid" at the MTV awards, and many people will be watching this space.

Madonna Hairstyle 2008

Madonna wore this medium curly hairstyle late last year in New York. It's been cut to one length, and layers through the back and sides have helped intensify the volume. At the front, layers were cut to shape her face, and it's quite a low maintenance style.

This hairstyle could be better, and I'm sure even Perez Hilton would be a little disappointed with Madonna here. It's just a bit "regular" don't you think? And its shape is a little too triangular and short and makes her heart shaped face look even wider. My suggestion for the MTV awards: keep the color only.

How to Make Straight Hair Into Afro Hair for Fall 2008

When the seasons change - so does our hair - depending on your naturally curly, coily, kinky, wavy or Afro hair type and/or the part of the world in which you live.

If you want that full, wavy look, you need to sleep in braids overnight but if you want a thicker, bigger look, you will need additional styling tools and should follow the entire set of steps.

Steps How to Make Straight Hair Into Afro Hair:

1. First grow your hair out.
2. Start with wet hair if possible. Comb hair up and outward so it gets body.
3. Braid your hair into six or eight sections.
4. Sleep in the braids overnight to get the best look.
5. Unbraid your hair when you get up in the morning. Bend over and tousle your hair with your fingers.
6. Divide each of the six or eight sections into four individual sections with a rat-toothed comb. Do this one section at a time.
7. With each of the four "mini" sections, backcomb(tease) your hair gently until you achieve your desired Afro, or at least wavy hair.

Tips How to Make Straight Hair Into Afro Hair

If your braid is more than a half inch thick, you need to section off your hair in smaller widths.
If you want the "cornrow look," you need to section off your hair into smaller sections and French braid them. If you choose to use products, try to use natural ones that won't damage your hair.Make sure hair completely dries before taking out braids.

If you are caucasian, asian, european, or non-native australian/new zealander take extra care with cornrows!! You do not have enough sebum coming out of your scalp to do it safely naturally, you need to smear grease (such as an oil or jojoba), and quite a bit, in order to be safe! If you do not, your cornrows will contract when you wet them while swimming, out in the rain, or bathing/showering. This can lead to severe skin irritation and in extremely rare cases your scalp tearing. Don't experiment with products you are unsure of.

How to Straighten Your Hair With a Straightener

How to Straighten Your Hair

First purchase a straightening iron. The more expensive versions have ceramic plates and can cost about $80,while cheaper options are available. Wash, condition, and blow dry your hair until it is partially dry, let it dry the rest of the way on its own the plug in the straightener for 5 minutes to allow it to heat up. For an ultra smooth finish choose a styling product designed for use with straightening irons and apply to hair. Working on small sections of hair creates a smoother finish. Start by running your fingers through your hair from the front just below the ears, and clip the upper layer out of the way. When you have completed the lower section, unclip your hair and run your fingers through using the middle of your face as a guide then repeat, clipping your hair up into sections until your hair is totally straight, when you're finished, let your hair cool down and if required spray with a little hairspray. How to Straighten Your Hair With a Straightener

Straightening your hair regularly can cause damage and split ends. Condition regularly with a hot oil treatment to protect your hair.Choose your hair brushes carefully,a vent brush is best when blow drying hair, and a large paddle brush to get a smooth finished look.

Tips for How to Staighten Your Hair
* Straightening irons get very, very hot. Be careful not to burn yourself.
* Do not plug your straightening iron anywhere near water.
* Never leave your straighteners unattended when plugged in.
* Do not leave your straighteners on a flammable surface.
* NEVER ever straighten your hair when it's wet! This causes damage. Unless you have a wet-to-dry straightener.
* Try not to straighten your hair every day. Unless you use a heat protector, to protect your hair from the heat.

How to Remove and Prevent Split Ends

Prevent Split Ends

Split ends
are ugly and very unattractive. If left alone the condition will only worsen. There is no true way to remove split ends aside from cutting your hair, but you can take care of your hair and prevent their return.

Split ends
are the curse of every woman!! Split ends happen when the protective cuticle has been stripped away from the ends of hair. Hair splits into two or three strands.

The hair usually splits at the end of the hair forming a Y-shape. Split ends can travel up the hair.

The split may be two or three centimeters in length. Split ends are more often in long hair but can also be found in shorter hair. You cannot repair them; nothing will fix split ends once they are formed.

How to Remove and Prevent Split Ends

Cause of split ends

• Excessive hair coloring

• Vigorous brushing

• Perming solutions

• Hair Straightening

• Heat during hairstyling work

• Not trimming your hair regularly

• Sleeping with your hair in a ponytail

• Too much sun

• Poor health

Removal

1. Notice split ends in your hair. The scientific name is Trichoptilosis, a longitudinal splitting of the hair fiber, and there are several types:
* The generic end split
* Splits occurring multiple times up the same strand of hair
* A split occurring in the middle of the hair strand that will appear as a hole if the strand is bunched up
* Single strand knots (not really split ends) which occur most often in dry, curly hair
2. Get your hair trimmed regularly, meaning every four to six weeks. All hair gets damaged after a while. Get a trim of at least 1/2 to 1 inches, and you should have solved the problem. It will remove split ends and keep your hair healthy and growing strong.

3. Cut them yourself between haircuts using a pair of hair shears. Cut about 1/4" above the split of a single strand; there may even be a small ball above the split. If you don't cut above the damage, the split will reappear.

4. Avoid products that claim to "heal" split ends. They will only temporarily glue split ends together. They may help prevent messy hair, but they will cause more damage farther down the road.

Prevention

Here are some of the ways hair is damaged everyday and how to prevent damage from these factors and in turn split ends.
Chemicals

Any kinds of chemicals are going to damage your hair to some extent. Chemicals from getting a perm, having your hair highlighted, colored, etc., or even chlorine in bath or pool water all count.

1. Try to steer clear of chemicals. Natural hair is beautiful. If you absolutely must color your hair, search for the gentlest coloring agent you can find. If you are going to be using chemicals on your hair, be sure to condition your hair more often.

2. Protect your hair before swimming in a pool, ocean, or lake. This could include: using a leave-in conditioner, oiling your hair, or using a swim cap. Be sure to rinse and shampoo your hair as soon as possible after swimming.

3. Find out if the water you use to wash your hair is harmful.
* There can be damaging chemicals in the water you wash your hair with...mainly chlorine. There are filters that will reduce the amount of chlorine in your water.
* High concentrations of calcium carbonate can make your water "hard". If you are in the US you can check this map to see how hard the water in your area is. A water softening system will be most beneficial to your hair if you live in a hard water area.

Brushing and Combing

Many people don't realize just how fragile the ends of hair are. Being too rough with a brush or comb, or brushing or combing too often can damage your hair.

1. Stop teasing or back combing your hair. This is the most damaging type of brushing. It pulls up the scales of your hair and when you comb/brush that section again the scales break off.

2. Find a hair friendly comb and/or brush. If you have thicker hair you may need to use a pick or wide-toothed comb. Combs in general are more gentle. Your brush or comb should aid you in untangling your hair, not pulling it out.

3. Never over brush. 100 brushstrokes is not necessary, and may lead to more splits than anything else.

4. Comb the hair gently. Start at the bottom and work your way up. When you encounter a tangle, don't rip the comb/brush through it, stop and untangle with your fingers and then proceed. You have to be extremely gentle while untangling wet hair. Curly hair types may require combing the hair when it is still wet.

5. Use hair friendly accessories.

• The black band is the most hair unfriendly in this group because of the metal connector. Smaller versions of this are even more harmful.

• The big green band is joined together by what appears to be glue and is much more friendly.

• The little yellow band is a smaller version of the green one and friendly for thinner hair types. They can also be made of clear plastic. These little bands are ideal to tie off the ends of braids.

• The big blue scrunchie is the most hair friendly. These are easy to make, but you can buy them at any place that sells hair care products.

The Sun

Protect your hair from the Sun. Ultraviolet rays can be as damaging to your hair as your skin.

1. Wear a hat. If your hair is super long and/or thick, be sure to get a hat that you will be able to fit all your hair into (preferably in a bun).

2. Look for conditioners that contain sunscreen or mix sunscreen and conditioner together and leave that in your hair.

Washing and Drying

Incorrect washing and washing with shampoos that are too harsh or contain certain ingredients can be damaging to your hair. Rubbing your hair with a towel to dry it can cause nasty damage to your hair. Using a hairdryer on your hair too often will also cause damage.

1. Buy a good shampoo and conditioner and experiment with what works best with your hair. This may include not washing it everyday--possibly conditioning it will suffice.

2. Wash your hair properly. It is best to only wash the scalp hair and leave the length to hang down your back...the length should not be piled on top of your head. When you rinse the shampoo out of your hair, the shampoo will run down the length, that is a much washing as the ends of your hair need. Conditioner should then be applied to the length to soak for a while before rinsing out. Hot water strips away moisture so rinse your hair with the coolest water you can stand.

3. Deep condition regularly. If your conditioner regimen isn't working, try a "deep condition" once or twice a month. This involves putting a leave-in conditioner or oil on your hair and leaving it in for a while. Oils like jojoba and coconut oil are fantastic for this.

4. Dry hair gently. Vigorously rubbing your hair dry with a towel is not a good idea. Dripping wet hair should be gently squeezed with a towel to get rid of the excess water. Once the excess water is removed, it is best to let your hair air dry naturally.

5. Tone down the drying. If you are using a dryer or hot tongs regularly, your hair will start to show some damage--the hot air removes moisture from your hair. Using too hot a setting or holding the dryer too close to your hair will also cause damage.

How to Care for Straight Hair

Haircut styles presents How to Care for Straight Hair

Do you find yourself not being able to care for your straight hair, even if it may seem easy for others? If you have straight hair, but don't know how to care for it, you're in the right place, so read on.

Straight Hair Tips

How to do this:

1. Wash your hair around every day to every other day. Always wash your hair after you swim.
2. Brush out your hair so it is tangle free before you get it wet.
3. Wet the hair thoroughly.
4. Pour the shampoo into your hand, and foam it up by rubbing your hands together. Work the shampoo into your hair, scrubbing the scalp with your fingertips and being careful not to snarl the ends too much (i.e. piling it up on top of your head). If you have oily hair you will probably have to shampoo every day.
5. Condition your hair. A good conditioner will help keep your hair health and will make it easier to untangle after shampooing. If you have dry hair you will need to use a moisturizing conditioner. However, if you have oily hair you can use a basic conditioner.
6. Keep a wide-toothed comb in the shower and comb through your hair before you rinse the conditioner out.
7. Rinse the conditioner out completely; being extra careful to not snarl the ends.
8. Blot the hair with a towel, and comb it out once more.
9. Have a hair stylist cut your hair every four to six weeks to remove any split ends. Straight hair is probably the most prone to split ends and should be treated gently .

Tips

* Blow dry your hair no more than four times a week. Blow drying and straightening are damaging to the hair. Try to use the coolest setting.
* Add a few drops of honey to your conditioner to make it extra moisturizing.
* Try using a swim cap when you swim to prevent chlorine damage. Also, avoid hair altering chemicals as much as possible.
* Protect your hair from the sun by wearing a hat or looking for hair products that contain sunscreen.
* Look for hair friendly hair ties- ones without metal connectors. Wear your hair in a braid if you want to decrease snarling.

Do not wring your wet hair with a towel. Only brush wet hair when it is slick with conditioner to prevent tangles. You may want to do this in the shower before you rinse the conditioner out, or right after the shower after applying a hair mousse or leave-in conditioner.

How to Get Your Hair to Shine

Haircut Styles: How to Get Your Hair to Shine

Steps
:

1. Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner.
2. Towel dry until damp.
3. Mix a solution of mostly water, with a tiny bit of conditioner, mousse, and hair spray, in a spray bottle.
4. Comb out your hair, and apply the solution all over your hair, then brush it out.
5. Blow dry your hair until completly dry.
6. Spray the solution on again, but very lightly, and let air dry.

Tips to make your hair shine:

* Bring instant shine to your hair by lightly beating two eggs in milk and massaging them in your hair thoroughly. Rinse after five minutes.
* A little vodka in your shampoo, if used occasionally, can make your thick hair shine instantly.
* Yet another way to make your hair shine for blondes is to add two tablespoons of lemon juice in your rinse water after shampooing, while brunettes and redheads can add apple cider vinegar to their rinse water.
* Everybody can get a vibrant hair color by wisely using his or her garden products! Brunettes can use handful of fresh rosemary sprigs, blondes can use dried chamomile, orange-tone redheads can use chopped up carrot while berry-tone redheads can use chopped up beet. Boil one quart of water. Tie the suitable ingredient according to your hair color in a piece of doubled cheesecloth and toss it into the boiling water. Remove them from heat and let the water soak the color for about 10 minutes. Then, remove the cheesecloth bag. Shampoo and rinse your hair thoroughly. Pour the color enhancer you have prepared over your hair, while it is warm. Be sure it is not hot. Rinse it finally with a quart of cold water. Do this once a month for that lustrous hair posed by models.
* Honey is good for skin and hair. Take 4 cups of warm water and stir 1 teaspoon of honey in it. Pour it into your hair after shampooing and let the hair dry as normal. You don't need to rinse it.
* Over-processed hair lose their shine too so be careful nor to overuse all those chemical hair products in the market. Silicone products add shine to hair momentarily but are difficult to wash out causing a buildup that make your hair dull. Vinegar rinse should be used sparingly too or it may dry out your hair.
* Cold water rinsing makes your hair look shinier as it closes and smoothens the hair cuticle. To further enhance the shine, you can use a finishing crème during and after blow-drying your hair.
* Adding shine to gray hair and keeping them from getting that yellow tint can be difficult. However a professional gloss treatment at the salon seals the cuticle and makes the hair look shinier than ever. It lasts for five weeks.
* Heat activated shampoos and weekly deep conditioning for your hair keep them glossy.

How to Have Instant Wavy Hair Without Chemicals

If you want natural-looking waves but don't want to spend a fortune on chemical hair treatments, use these tips to create waves quickly.
Steps

1. Wash your hair as normal, but use slightly less conditioner.
2. Towel-dry your hair gently, but do not rub it, as it will create frizz. Just press the towel on your hair so that it is not dripping wet.
3. brush your hair using a wide-toothed comb. Make sure there are no patches of frizz or tangles.
4. French braid all of your hair. Blow dry.
5. Undo the braids when your hair is throughly dry. Your hair should be wavy. Now style it however you want.

Apply a gentle styling gel before you braid your hair. It will smooth your hair and help the waves hold. Keep your braids in overnight if possible and curl the ends of your braids around rollers to prevent them from sticking out at an angle. Be careful if your hair is wet when you undo the braids, your waves won't hold.

Things You'll Need for the job:

* Shampoo
* A towel
* A hair clip
* Hair lotion(Optional)

How to Treat Male Pattern Hair Loss

Hair loss can be either natural or caused by disease. The most common hair loss is thinning of the hair caused by androgens (male hormones).

Accept it. Consider it a visible symbol of your increasing wisdom. Tolerating hair loss is the healthiest and cheapest way to cope with hair loss. If that technique is too hard on the ego, read on.

Consider some of the hair loss drugs. Arguably, the best drug treatment for male hair loss is 1mg of Finastride taken orally once a day and Minoxidil applied directly to the scalp in either a 2 or 5 percent solution.
* Take Finastride once a day without food. The drug should be used in a 6 month or 12 month period.
* Take 1 ml Minoxidil 2 percent or 5 percent solution and apply directly to a clean, dry scalp. The studies have shown that those using the 5 percent solution achieve better results.

Tips:
* Men who want to swap Minoxidil with Finastride should use minoxidil for four months after starting Finastride to prevent any hair loss that occur from stopping Minoxidil treatment.
* Minoxidil appears to work best in people whose hair loss has just begun. So the best time to begin minoxidil treatment is right at the moment you notice that your crown is thinning (but not completely bald).
* Since it takes time to grow hair, you may notice results faster if you keep your hair cut really short. This minimizes the amount of time you need to notice a difference.
* Using dandruff shampoo regularly instead of regular shampoo has been known to cut down hair loss by 7% and increase hair growth by 5 % This tip was found in Men's Health Magazine

Finastride should be used with caution in those with liver disorder. The drugs have side effects which will disappear after prolonged treatment and when the drug use is stopped. See your doctor before pursuing any treatment.

The drugs are not recommended for men over 60 or women. There are many other well-documented, serious side effects that have been around since 1998, including, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, weight gain, etc. Be aware that these side effects are most commonly seen when taking the oral form of Minoxidil (Loniten is one brand name) and not the topical form. If you choose to drink your minoxidil 5% solution, you might experience these side effects. Topical minoxidil's most common side effect is a slight redness at the site of application.

Healthy Hair Basics Tips

Haircut Styles presents Basics for Healthy Hair

Healthy hair works from the inside out. That means, if you want to have great locks, you have to start with good nutrition. Ample protein, fresh produce, and water are the keys to getting great looking hair. Vitamin E is also great for a healthy shine. So, try to add some whole grains or nuts into your diet as well. Once you’ve built a foundation of hair-healthy food, caring for your strands is the next step in keeping them healthy.

Healthy Hair
Healthy Hair Tips 2008:
Washing your hair regularly is important, but over-washing can ruin a healthy head of hair. For most people, washing every two to three days is plenty. Also, choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair is important. This all depends on the type of hair you have, so you will need to get familiar with hot moist, thick, and wavy your locks are. Need help deciding what’s best? Consult a stylist for a second opinion.

The same is true when styling hair. You need to choose the right products for your locks. Finally, over doing it with heating appliances, like a blow drier, can fry strands. This is one of the most common ways women ruin their hair. So, use a heat protecting product and keep your appliances on the lowest setting possible. If you follow these tips, you are sure to have healthy hair for years to come.

Hair Care Tools

Haircut Styles presents Hair Care Tools

Using the right hair care tools can enhance the hairstyles that you wear and also protect the hair. Most of the tools are found
at local drug stores, while the professional tools are easily available at specialized shops that sell hair care products used by the professional hairstylists at the salons.

There are three different types of brushes that are used for styling the hair. These are the round brush, the paddle brush and the vent brush. Usually the round brush is used for flipping the hair up or making it round at the top at the time of blow drying the hair. The paddle brush is used for longer locks and for curling hair.

A wide tooth comb is sued for entangling the hair especially when it’s wet. Curly hair gets tangled extremely fast and a wide tooth comb can easily loosen the locks without causing any strains. Hair accessories such as hair clips, barrettes, hair pins and rubber bands are used for creating the looks.

Spray bottles are used for wetting the hair during a hair cut. A blow dryer is used for drying and styling the hair in many ways. Curling irons are used for curling the hair in the desired way. Plastic curling irons shouldn’t be used since they might overheat.

Hair Tools and Purposes:

Round brush - Flips hair up, turns it under, or creates volume on top while you're blow- drying. There are several kinds of round brush. If possible look one with natural bristles which are gentler on hair.

Paddle brush - This brush is good for styling longer locks and straightening curly hair. Use the one with a rubber base and nylon or natural bristles.

Vent brush - This brush add volumes to any hair type. This is to use when you're blow drying your hair. The hole design allows the air to pass.

Wide-tooth comb - This is a good tool of detangling wet hair. If your hair is thinning or falling. This comb is good to use. Its wide teeth. Minimize untangles the hair easily and lessen the damage.

Hair Accessories - Like hair clips, barrettes, hair pins, pony tail. They are necessary basic for holding your hair.

Spray bottle - One of the handiest items to have, use it to spray problem areas rather than rewetting your hair all over. Any plastic bottle that sprays water will do.

Curling iron - Look for a stainless steel curling iron can be used to create a variety of curly styles. It's not ideal to buy a plastic curling iron cause they might overheat. They can damage your hair.

Blow-dryer - Use to dry and style hair.

Tips in buying a blow dryer:

1. A good blow-dryer should have a minimum of 1250 watts.

2. Look for one with at least two speeds and three heat settings hot, warm, and cool.

3. Higher speeds and hotter settings remove moisture; lower speeds and cooler settings set the style in place with minimal heat damage and greater control.

4. Many blow-dryers also come with attachments; look for one with a diffuser.

5. A diffuser acts to spread out air flow, minimizing damage from direct heat.

6. With a diffuser, it's much easier to style hair, because the air flow doesn't blow strands every which way.

Hair Restoration Tips Fall 2008

Haircut Styles presents Hair Restoration Tips

Losing one’s hair, whether from damage or genetics, can be highly discouraging. Bald spots look good on no one, but solving the problem can seem impossible. However, there is no reason to lose hope completely. There are ways to restore hair. First, though, you need to prevent any future hair loss from happening.
